I live in a little house in Seattle, WA, owned by a landlord who is a passionate flower gardener and has the house surrounded by pretty perennials. Last fall a cedar tree put its roots through the sewer pipes, and in the process of fixing them, the plumber dug up and killed almost everything growing in the backyard. this is kind of a tall order. Ive been asked to supply a list of 'healing' plants for a medicinal herb garden but its SHADE! dappled shade, I wouldnt even call it part shade.

The only think I can think of is Solomons Seal (Polygonatum) and St. Johnswort (Hypericum prolificumthe garden isnt for actual harvesting, it's sort of a demonstration/'this ( Read more... )

I've given up on my veggie garden area and have decided just line that fence with Azaleas instead, and I had a few questions...

I have been eying some jasmine at a local nursery, specifically Arabian and Star.  The plants at the nursery are placed under a canopy and from what I can tell don't get any sunlight save for maybe in the wee hours of the morning. I have a small corner of my courtyard which is walled in and entirely enclosed with lattice and shadecloth so while it gets a fair amount of light it basically doesn't get any direct sunlight ( Read more... )

Finally gotten the digital camera going again, so I can share pictures too!

My garden is about nine years old, so it's a bit overgrown, but I love it dearly. The plantable space behind the house is roughly 40x40 feet (I live in the middle of a city) and until recently has been deeply shaded.
